Parallel parking is one of the basic exercises, which is taught at a driving school and whose knowledge is very often tested in the GDB exam. However, one thing is to do the exercise on the platform, surrounded by signal cones and risers, and it is quite another thing to do the right parallel parking in real terms.

In fact, if you remember all the rules that were taught in driving schools, how to judge the dimensions of their car and other cars, and to calculate their actions, it is not difficult to make parallel parking in the city.

Parallel reverse parking (tips and video)

Before you start the maneuver, you need to choose a location for the future parking lot and assess whether your car will be there. Slowly passing a potential parking space, evaluate its size visually: to put the car in parallel without problem, you need approximately one and a half lengths of your car. When the right place is found between two parked cars, you can proceed directly to maneuver.

  1. Keep moving parallel to the front. Make sure that the side interval (the distance between your side and your standing car) is not less than half a meter.
  2. "Proteing" the car until the rear corner of the front car is equal to your rear wheel (some instructors give another direction: the depth of the "tractor" must always be greater than the side interval).
  3. Turn on the right blinker to indicate your future manoeuvre for other drivers.
  4. You stop, you steer right to the right, and you move slowly back.
  5. Watch the mirror, watch your car safety. Particular attention will be given to the left side mirror, where the "face" of the car parked behind will gradually appear.
  6. As soon as the rear-car's right-point lamp appeared in the left mirror, put the wheels straight and continue the slow movement backwards.
  7. As soon as the front right corner of your vehicle is at the level of the left rear corner of the standing vehicle, roll the rudder to the left and keep moving.
  8. When the vehicle rose parallel to the carriageway and was on the same line as the other cars, the manoeuvre could be considered complete.

If you are not able to completely align the car from the first "call", you will have to go a little bit forward, as far as the distance ahead of the car is ahead, and make another move backward.

Useful tips for parallel parking

  • Evaluate your vehicle dimensions. If the rear door of the vehicle has a front door or a spare wheel, do not forget to take into account the size of the spare wheel.
  • Complete manoeuvre, make sure that the front and rear vehicles remain in the exit space. You don't have to press on any of the cars, be nice to the other drivers.
  • Don't underestimate the work of electronic assistants in parallel parking. The parktronic, rear-view camera, or automatic lowering of the right side mirror can make your life easier.
