The coast has many questions and disputes with the car owners. Some argue that the coast-down movement saves fuel, while others argue that the coast is "killing" and the transmission, and the engine. Who's right?

We're going to get this thing started. The coast down is the movement in neutral gear after acceleration or downhill. Some coast-down drivers are still clutting the clutch to fully crush the link between the engine and the gearbox. Most often, the coast-down is used on prolonged downhill or adjacent to intersections in dense traffic.

A coast-down movement is considered to be a good way to save fuel. In fact, even at idle speed, the vehicle is consumed by fuel (on average, 2-3 l/100 km). As the practice shows, in the meters that the car will be overcome in neutral gear, that is the coast down, the savings will not be very significant. It is much more efficient to leave the gear engaged and just for the time to stop pressing the gas (in fact, start braking)-in such a case, the engine does not consume any fuel.

In addition, another common view is that the coast down is more efficient. In fact, only the primary braking system is operated with the gear off. In addition, during a roll-forward, the risk of wheel lock is very high and, as a consequence, the loss of controllability. Such braking may be particularly dangerous on a slippery or wet road after the rain.

Another argument that amateurs typically drive is the increase of the coupling, thanks to the frequent shutdown of the gear. In fact, studies have shown that the intensity of adhesion does not have a strong impact on its durability. It is much more important to change the gear in a timely manner-it is really possible to extend the life of the transmission.

In Soviet times, many drivers did not just switch to neutral gear, but also jammed the engine for a short time. In fact, in modern cars it is not only useless, but also dangerous. Many car systems now operate only when the engine is running (for example, a GTP or a vacuum booster), so when the engine is shut off, the car can become unmanageable. In addition, during the re-launch process, there is a risk that the steering wheel lock will work-then the wheel will be blocked directly during the motion.
