On the Ford Focus 1 the comfort functions are managed by a separate unit called GEM module or comfort module. It is located above the engine control unit and controls the illumination of the passenger compartment, direction indicators and emergency alarm, heating of glass, windscreens, open and closed doors, remote control and locking of doors and luggage. GEM-module started to be installed on Focus in 2001.
