Such disputes are rooted deeply in the history of the automotive industry. The first mention of the word torpedo dates back to 1918. At that time, cars with a torpedo body appeared in France. The peculiarity of the body was a smooth transition from sidewalls and windshield to the hood of the car.

First, the German firm, Torpedo, had a long time among the dashboard manufacturers. Second, it is known that the manufacturers of the first steam Soviet-era cars of the NIM-1, in technical guidance, have identified the dashboard with the torpedo.

In addition, the body of the car now has a different name-phase-probably due to confusion with the names the new term has been introduced. In order to confirm the validity of the use of "torpedo" the facts are practically not present, except the appearance of the shape of the panel of old cars with underwater projectile.  Design

Design

Car torpedo is made mostly of plastic. The salon in the passenger compartment is carried by means of bolts, which allows to carry out the disassembly if necessary. Pressed cardboard may also serve as a material for the manufacture of a torpedo. Tighten the cardboard, vinyl under the skin, into the tone of the salon. Another version of the material is carbon. Such a torpedo can be seen in supercar showrooms, for example, Pagani Huyara.

On some cars, torpedo "water" panels from valuable wood breeds. For example, the Nissan Terra and Jaguar X-type concept is equipped with a tree with vinyl covering. Jaguar uses a nut, and Nissan is a natural venom. Dealing with wooden panels is a distinctive feature of the executive's cars.  On expensive sports cars such as Lamborgini or McLaren, torpedo may be sown by hand skin or alcantara.

Torpedo forms

Automotive manufacturers often experimented with the shape of a torpedo and the placement of onboard equipment. For many brands of torpedo has become a kind of family trait, a detail that will be known.

The first domestic steam cars of the NAVI-1 were equipped with torpedo of metal. The appearance was far from perfect and the rigidity of the structure increased the injuries in the collision. In the future, such materials were practically not used in Soviet or foreign cars.

BMW engineers designed the passenger compartment in such a way that the driver would be as comfortable as possible. For the first time, the torpedo with the central console on the driver's side appeared on the BMW E21 in the mid-1970s. The trend has been preserved and has become the trademark of the 3rd and 6th episodes of the Bavarian company. Initially, the console was quite poor, but now it's more like the dashboard of the plane.

Chevalier Z24 and Buick Riviera cars were developed at the height of space technology.  This led to the fact that the dashboard of these cars were equipped with a huge number of devices, buttons, and tumblers, which were highlighted with poison-green light.

Japanese Honda CR-V is also an unusual form of torpedo. The first CR-V models, which were produced in 1997-1998, were equipped with an automatic gearbox, the selector of which was located on the steering column. With the release of the "left-handed" version of the car, Honda began to install a manual gearbox with a floater-gear lever. At the time, the torpedo was not original. An unconventional decision of engineers appeared on the updated version of the car in 2002. The ACPR lecturer was placed on a torpedo near the dashboard. However, drivers did not approve of the novelty, first of all for making the lever "not the mare's tail".

The next step of the designers was much more successful. Not leaving the attempts to place the selector in the most convenient and beautiful way, the engineers supplemented the torpedo with a special panel for securing the arm of the ACPR. As a result, the central tunnel disappeared and there was a free space between the chairs.

The 2012 update again affected the design of the salon. The selector remained the same, but there was a central tunnel that would isolate the driver. According to the customer's feedback, this type of organization of the driver's seat is most convenient.

Torpedo modern car

As of today, the number of onboard equipment is constantly increasing and having to be installed as compact as possible. However, special attention must be paid to the dashboard. The information should be easy to read, and the buttons for managing the various systems are easy to read.

Mandatory minimum instrumentation for the modern panel:

-State of the vehicle systems (brake system, auto-signal equipment and passive safety system);

-Traffic performance (speed, engine speed);

-the condition of the engine, running gear, transmission;

In addition to the measuring instruments, the front of the torpedo is the steering column, audio-video equipment, the control panel of the climate unit.

This is not the end of a modern car torpedo. The torpedo design provides a kind of niche that contains a seat cushion for the front passenger. The pillow is behind a small door or panel across the seat.  When the safety system is functioning, the wing is thrown and the pillow is filled with great pressure.
