History of the formation and development of the sedan

At the end of the eighteenth century, the car looked like a normal caravan, only instead of the horses in motion by the engine running under the seats.

This layout was not very convenient. The engine was badly chilled, and it was extremely uncomfortable to service him. Yeah, and sitting on the fervent heat of the engine is a dubious pleasure. These drawbacks decided in a simple way: put the engine forward. This arrangement of the powertrain has proved to be so successful that it is still in use.

But if the front position of the engine was fast and firmly embedded in the layout of the machine, it was much more difficult to determine with the easiest body. At the dawn of the car, the cars were open with soft or, on the opposite side, closed cars with doors and without. Manufacturers continued to copy the usual carriages. That's why bodywork, mostly from a tree.

It was only in the twentieth years of the last century that automobiles that resembling modern sedans began to appear. The three-volume building of the time consisted of the engine compartment, cabin and trunk. Only the trunk was a suitcase anchored in the back of the body.

The word "sedan", which is called the three-volume in Russia and the United States, is not generally accepted: in Japan, this type of body is called Saloon, and in France it is called Berline

As long as Henry Ford filling the market with the cheap "Lizzy tin", the competitors bet on the design. In the past, the functional elements have become the object of attention of designers. For example, wings that were formerly simple streaks of metal, protecting grads from mud, water and stones, began to acquire the forms of pretentious forms. The driver's archery has completely moved to the general salon. And the trunk of a kfra, which looked like a foreign element, finally became the same whole body.

The trunk was originally separated from the cabin by a whole bulkhead. This arrangement made it possible not to disturb the passengers during loading and unloading of baggage. In the future, the hard back of the backseat became a double function, so the heavy metal wall disappeared from the structure.

Development of the sedan sedan in the mid-20th century

In the 1960s, in Europe and North America, there was a special demand for two-door sedans. Manufacturers often called them "coupe" to attract customers to their model. But modern marketers have gone even further: for example, Mercedes CLS and Volkswagen Passat CC have developed a "four-door compartment", although in fact it is the flesh of classic sedans.
