The flame arrester is one of the types of resonators. It shall be installed in an exhaust system with no catalytic converter. The flame-arrester is the first to take on a wave of hot gases and is experiencing congestion.

As long as the flame arrester's stuffing is burning in the hellfire, its body is exposed to environmental and high temperature. Usually the flame arrester is relatively high (short distance from the exhaust manifold). However, it is not immune from dirt and water, which is always sufficient under the bottom of the car, and the flow of hot gas goes through it incandently. The material of the shell must therefore be solid and durable and the construction is reliable.

The flame arrester is often offered as a substitute for a failed catalyst. When replacing, it is important to remember that the catalyst is fitted with a lambda-a probe that is not in the flame arrester

The external flame arresters of different manufacturers are similar, and they differ mainly in the composition of steel alloys, of which the body and stuffing are made-the most common for the first and the second is the heat-resistant stainless steel. The body and its fastenings shall effectively extinguize the vibration.

What is made of a flame arrester

Usually a universal flame arrester is filled with ceramfibre that can withstand temperatures above 1,000 degrees. The filler is most often compacted in the frame by wire so that it does not interfere with the flow of the gas. There may also be a diffuser pattern that breaks the exhaust stream without generating substantial resistance and overloads.


A flame arrester may be different with a single reservation-the shell should always be double-ply. Some constructions use the principle of absorbing sound waves in a thicker of basalt fibre between the outer casing and a stainless-net tube inside the flame arrester. In other constructions the role of the inner body is performed by a steel tube with a special shape. Oretion is used to equate the exhaust gas flow from different engine cylinders. The design and shape of the ribs may vary, so the replacement of a flame arrester may not only be utilitarian, but also aesthetic, as the sound from the silencer with the new part may change, becoming more "noble" or coarse.

Flame arrester considerations

Often, the exhaust system shall be fitted with a flame arrester to replace the failed catalyst. This replacement can save money, but before it can be agreed, it is necessary to know how much it will cost the so-called "trick", which replaces the catalyst installed in the Lambda probe. It is possible that an untenable catalyst will cost about as much as the entire set required to replace the flame arrester.
