Any engine shall be vibrated at the time of operation. This is because, depending on the number of cylinders, the design of the engine may be more or less balanced, but it is practically impossible to achieve the full balance. Noise and vibration are transmitted to the passenger compartment and on the body of the car and cause a feeling of discomfort to the driver.

The engine suspension system has been invented to combat this phenomenon. Its key parts are the supports, which are often called pillows of the engine. Opora is the buffer installed in the anchorage points between the engine and the frame, the imam, or the body of the car. They absorb the vibrations of the engine and keep it in a relatively static position. The engine is in turn protected from shocks and shocks.

The History of Engine Relination

For the first time, serious thought was given to the need to reduce the vibration of the Walter Chrysler body, the founder of Chrysler Corporation. He assigned this task to the lead engineer Frederick Zeder, who proposed to install between the engine and the frame of the rubber gasket. This concept was implemented in cars of the 1932nd model year of the satellite brand Plymouth, which was part of the group of companies Walter Chrysler.

Location of the support-leg installation

The number of points of reference depends on the direction of the engine within the body and the calculations of the manufacturer's engineering team, so the supports can be four, five or more. The main criterion in selecting the points is the reliability of the anchorage and the low probability of engine displacement. In most cases, the engine that is assembled into a common box with a gearbox is fixed in three or four points at the bottom and two or three at the top.

Types of support, strengths and weaknesses

In modern cars, the pillars of the two main types are used-rubber and hydraulic.

Rubber supports

The design of the rubber supports is simple-the bottom supports are two metal plates and a rubber cushion between them. The upper supports are like a short suspension lever with side-blocks. One side of the "lever" shall be mounted with a straight bolt to the bracket on the body-arm, the other to the bracket bolted to the cylinder block. This type of support has been most widely spread by reliability and cheapness in production.

The vibration-reduction technology on the body, invented by the engineers of Chrysler was called Floating Power

In some designs, the lower supports are reinforced with springs for stiffness and increased elasticity. Instead of rubber, some manufacturers use polyurethane (polyurethane) as a more wear-resistant material. Polyurethane (polyurethane) cushions are also often used for sports cars, to increase rigidity. In connection with the tunning modem, some small firms have established polyurethane support for all more-less-relevant car models. Rubber-metal and polyurethane poles also classify for latrine and unlatrine construction.

Hydraulic support

Hydraulic poles are a more progressive mechanism. Such supports can be adjusted to different engine speeds and effectively vibrate at low and high speeds. The opores consist of two chambers with a membrane between them. The cameras are filled with propylene glycolo (anti-freeze) or special hydraulic fluid.

In order to further reduce the vibration in the cars of the business class, the supports are used not only to fastening the engine to the imitation, but also to mimic to the body, forming dual protection

The mobile membrane extinguies the idling speed of the engine. At high speeds or on the irregular road, hydraulic fluid is included. Under pressure, through special channels, it flows from one cell to another, making the pillar rigid. Strong vibration damps the vibration.

The supports can be:

  • Mechanical management. The design of such supports shall be calculated specifically for each model of the car. Already at the stage of development of a car model the question is solved: what task for the support will be the main-comfortable noise isolation at idling speed or the effective damping of vibrations at speed;
  • With an electronic control. Such supports are capable of responding to changes in the engine's vibration regime within a wider range; the support of the support leg is changed by electronic means depending on the road situation. These are the pillars of the new generation, which are able to provide the same comfort to engine operation in different regimes.

Technological progress in engine support

It is worth highlighting the so-called dynamic supports, which use liquid with magnetic properties (with metal particles), changing the viscosity under the operation of the magnetic field. Electronic sensors monitor steering wheels and accelerations.  Depending on the driving style and the state of the road surface under the influence of electromagnets, the liquid changes the properties by regulating the rigidity of the supports.

The average service life of an engine is more than 100 thousand kilometers

Dynamic supports are characterized by a unique electromagnetic system. It's a relatively new invention of the American Delphi company. The advanced technology has already found practical application in serial cars: it was adapted for the sports version of the 911 GT3 model by Porsche in 2011.

Operation and replacement

The raping and destruction of the pylon can lead to an unnecessary burden on the engine. This can quickly lead to problems in its work. Therefore, the supports and supports should be periodically monitored. Testing the tightening of nuts and bolts, removing the oil and dirt from rubber cushions-all these uncunning actions help to prolong the life of the poles. Frequently, the supports indicate the unwonky vibration of the body (which is particularly felt in the parking brake in the car with ACPR), as well as extraneous noise in the engine area.

Pin Status Check

Engine condition is not difficult to check. Try to switch the operating mode of the ACPR (or the transfer of the ICPC) from D (1st gear) to R (reversing). Transmit the transfer, each time move several centimeters forward and backward. If the supports are in poor condition, you will feel the levers in the transmission, regardless of the type of checkpoint (and the MKP's car is also a box control lever). In addition, the failure of the poles can be the cause of the levers in the transmission at high speed and gear shift. Automateurs often tend to ascribe these problems to ACPR problems, but check the condition of the supports before submitting the box.

Opores should be replaced if the inspection of the pit shows cracks and severe damage on the rubber fittings or separated from the metal base. Hydraulic fluid leak also gives rise to immediate replacement of the supports.
