Many drivers for the dilution of diesel in winter use anti-gel. It is believed that it can be replaced by kerosene, adding to the tank before loading at a rate of 10 to 20 per cent of the volume. The use of kerosene is justified because it will cost less than the anti-gel.

However, there is also the view that kerosene is only for military equipment working on diesel fuel. The more "tender" engines of the car may not accept it. In addition, if mixing occurs in a very cold way, kerosene is likely to be released and the engine is clean.
