The high voltage wires are used to transmit the high voltage to the spark plugs in the petrol engines on the basis of a single coil cylinder. It can be said that high voltage wires are gradually becoming a relic of the past, as the ignition system with the individual candles for each candle will become more and more widespread. Why do high-voltage wires in the ignition system?

Why do high-voltage wires in the ignition system?

One wire, which is different from the other (usually the shortest, and having the same connector on both ends) is used to connect the high voltage secondary coils of the ignition coil to the central contact of the ignition switch. The remaining wires (which are typically the number of engine cylinders) are connected by the side contacts of the Ignition (Ignition Distribution). The exception is the ignition system with two spark-ignition coils-the ignition was used, for example, in the case of VAZ 1111 "Oka".

History of high voltage wires

The need to transmit electrical impulses to the candle appeared together with the first prototypes of spark ignition. It is obvious that the first device of this type should be considered a toy electric piston, invented in 1780 by the physicist Alessandro Volta. In the design of the toy, the electric shock ignits a mixture of hydrogen with air, resulting in a cork out of the barrel. In the case of the ignition systems, a low-voltage battery that converts coils and candles (and therefore wires) was used in the Cadillac cars as early as the early twentieth century.

For the insulation of the high voltage wire, information about the manufacturer, the thickness of the insulating layer and the material, the cylinder number of the cylinder, and the type of the heart may be printed.

At this time, this element is gradually becoming an archaism, since a single coil system has become a relic of the past. Modern ignition systems for each cylinder are designed with a separate coil, which is mounted directly on the candle. This system has been given priority by increasing reliability, as the high-voltage wire is essentially an intermediate element, which, in fact, must be kept under constant surveillance and is much more comfortable without it.

Design of the high voltage wire

Even by the appearance of the high voltage wire, you can see that it is designed to operate under difficult conditions. The main force that it must confront is the vast difference of potential that reaches 40 kilovolts. Therefore, a multi-wire, secure, multilayer insulation is used for the production of "armour". In recent years, the most frequent use is made with insulation from silicone, which has proven itself in the winter conditions of exploitation (the rigidity of silicone hardly changes in the cold). Wires shall be maintained in the temperature range between -30 ° C and +100 ° C. Russian operating conditions often imply significantly lower temperatures. It happens that the mechanical strength of the insulation is artificially increased by the rubber, polymer, tissue, glass or cotton tape.

The choice of a live wire is determined by the enormous resistance to working under the highest voltage conditions. The principle applied in the construction of the armor is known as distributed active resistance.

The design of the wiring is almost always shielded. The fact is that high voltage current is generated by significant radio interference, which without shielding would affect the functioning of the audio system.  The high voltage wires are squeezing with reliable powerful tips from steel to connect to the coil and balancer contacts. All contacts are protected by rubber dielectric caps for sealing the connection points.

Issues of high voltage wires

In general, a failure of the high voltage wires is on the list of possible causes of ignition failure under number one. Conducts are extremely heavy and their service lives are low. The characteristics of the deterioration of the wiring are typical: the running engine, the running engine, the increased fuel consumption, the high and medium speed, and the reduced capacity. All these signs are getting worse if the weather is damp in the street.

The high voltage wiring is one of the most unfortunate events in the automotive wiring. In case of violation of the high voltage current transfer, it is possible to repair the valves

Only one way to fight these negative factors is by replacing high-voltage wires. At the same time, it is desirable to purchase original wires or high-quality products of a proven brand.

The shortcomings of the element are, of course, "callousness" and a short period of service. The indirect decency is an uncomplicated replacement-this operation can be performed even by a person who is not familiar with the car, since all the wires are of different length, and by comparing the old kit with the new one, the owner of the car will easily understand what kind of wire is going on.
